Target Audience
This initiative is designed to address the professional needs of NPs and PAs who manage patients with migraine.

Statement of Need

Primary care providers (PCPs) frequently struggle with accurate migraine diagnosis, resulting in significant rates of misdiagnosis and underdiagnosis. Despite migraine affecting millions of Americans, it continues to be underdiagnosed and undertreated in primary care settings. This diagnostic challenge is particularly concerning as most migraine patients first seek treatment from PCPs. Significant disparities exist in migraine diagnosis and treatment among racial and ethnic minority groups. People from African American, Latino, and American Indian and Alaska Native backgrounds are vastly underrecognized, underdiagnosed, and undertreated for migraine compared to their White counterparts.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this education, learners will be able to:

  • Utilize validated screening tools to accurately diagnose migraine in primary care settings.
  • Recognize the prevalence and impact of migraine in women across different life stages.
  • Apply gender- and reproductive-health considerations in migraine management.
  • Identify and mitigate racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic disparities in migraine diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes.
  • Utilize telehealth and other innovative approaches to enhance access to migraine care for underserved communities.
  • Define and distinguish between resistant and refractory migraine based on current clinical criteria.
  • Evaluate the efficacy of various pharmacologic options for resistant and refractory migraine.
